History

Saxvik School opened its doors the first time on November 17, 1952. There were 125 students for first, second, third and fourth grades. It had a multi-purpose room for music, audio-visual aids, PTA, and community activities.

The new building was named for the late H.O. Saxvik, Superintendent of schools for 20 years. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage in the spring of 1942 and was bedridden until his death in 1952.

He was active both as an administrator and advisor in athletic and youth groups. Saxvik spearheaded the formation of Bismarck Junior College, the Richholt Elementary and Bismarck High School were built during his term in office.

Most students' homes were within walking distance so a lunch program was not necessary at that time. A small kitchen made it possible, however, to serve lunches for community activities.

From the outside, Saxvik could be mistaken for a large residence. It rests on a hill-- has a step walk leading to the doors. Walls in the building are striking combinations of cypress, yellow and knotty pine, sitka spruce and maple. The cabinets are birch.

R.A. Ritterbush and brothers, architects, designed the building. It was constructed by William Kirshmeier, local contractor, and equipped at a cost of $133,862.00.

The four teachers at that time were Mrs. Virgil Luyben, principal, Mrs. Eugene Miller, Mrs. Peter Allen, and Miss Marian Lund.

Dr. Russell Saxvik painted the picture in the foyer of Saxvik School. The clouds represent the white in his father's hair and the trunk of the tree represents his father's strength.

Current Information

Presently, the school has two kindergarten, two 1st grade, three 2nd grade, two 3rd grade, two fourth grade, two 5th grade and two 6th grade classes. Saxvik has an average enrollment of 265 students.
